On Monday and Tuesday of last week I installed The Cans at the Third Floor Gallery. There are two series of The Cans installed, One Shot, and One Squeeze. One Squeeze is comprised of 71 mounted 6 by 9 photographs, and One Shot is 64. In total there are 135 mounted works in the gallery.
Monday morning I installed the One Shot series, on the wall with a window. I decided to put the smaller series on that wall because I felt it would fit better there. The wall at the end of the gallery has the stairs beside it with a small third wall. To install this series it was important that the top be level all the way across, regardless of the height from the floor. I started at the height of 62 inches from the floor, at one end. A 58-60 inch midpoint is the ideal height for displaying work, to get to 62 you take 9 divided by two and drop off the remainder and you have 62 inches for the top of the works. I wanted to keep them close to the viewing height, but still down far enough from the edge of the window seal. I used a laser level as seen in the second picture, in order to get the works level across the gallery, this involved moving the pedestal multiple times and then leveling it with the last 3 or 4 works in the line. I started at 62 inches on the left side, and going towards the elevator it dropped down to 60 and 3/4 inch, while still being level based on the laser level, but also visually it looks level.
On the opposite wall I installed the One Squeeze series. It was hung in much the same way, except that the laser stopped working in the level. So I used it as a level and just worked down the line one piece at a time. it had the same effect in the end and looks level. The drop off on this wall was a lot less. Started at 62 inches and ended at 61 3/4 inches. While I was hanging the works I was worried about running out of space, or two close to the edge of the wall. It was a tight fit, but there is still a two foot space from the last piece, to the edge of the wall.
Then in just came down to moving the lights, and some of the furniture around. That was done early on Tuesday morning.
Next week on Wednesday the 5th from 5pm to 7pm is the Closing Reception for the show. I hope to see some of you there.
